I’m so glad. Me and my sons have been anxiously awaiting the opening of the library. Hopefully the neighborhood kids will use it as a haven rather than something to graffiti.

My son and his local schoolmates were also saddened by the library vandalism. He is very excited about the reopening as well as myself,he enjoys reading very much.

A grand opening seems to be in order. Perhaps something in the field next to the library. It would be great if we could network our resources and make this thing a blow out. I personally am thinking about having locals like Pizza Hutt or Bilo kick in on the food and drink, maybe a cook out or bbq, see if BCSD can bring the DARE car over, C&B to provide a fire safety event for the kids, jump castles, volleyball, horseshoes, a whole day event. While fun and somewhat educational (if done right), this would also be a chance for the adults to meet their neighbors. I have the contact information for the county library director, and have spoken to the ladies working in this branch. Obviously the celebration would not fall on the actual opening date (today), but we all know there are usually a lot of nice weekends in March. What do ya’ll (SC born and raised) think?

Keith, I think it’s a GREAT idea! The Library’s opening has been so long awaited that we should get together and celebrate.

I also think its a great idea. Maybe also get Lowes’s, Home Depot, or a security company to have a display of home security products. Also have the Sheriff’s Department set up a child ID booth. I’ll be glad to help if I can.

I’m all for it. Is next Saturday (3/10) too soon?

When you plan the “party” keep in mind there are a lot of events going on in the area in March. The Flowertown walk is on the 17th, the Bridge Run is on the 31st (which I imagine is also Flowertown weekend. May put a damper on turnout if the “get together” occurs on any of these weekends? Just something to ponder is all….

I agree with Gigi, we can’t do it the same weekend as the Flowertown Run/Walk on the 17th and the Festival on the 31st. March 10 may be too short of notice to get it all together. The only weekend that looks good is the 24th. We would need to get on the ball though. Do we need to call a meeting together with some of the library personnel and decide how this will be done?

The 24th works for me… 3 weeks should be enough time to get everything together. So we are not running across each other, let’s divide and conquer. As far as I know right now we need to contact the Library (I have the point of contact info), BCSD (DARE car and Child ID), C&B (if possible, not sure if they are able to support an event or not), food and drinks, jump castles, tables and chairs, tents, maybe someone with a huge grill or someone willing to provide lunch. That is all I can come up with now. Anyone willing to take on part of this let me know which part(s). I will pick up the slack on whatever ya’ll are not able to do. I would like to have everything in place by the meeting on the 15th so we can get the word out at the meeting. I will check back here, or you can contact me at Lowes48fan@comcast.net.

I am very glad about all the interest in a grand opening! Let me share with you that there is a Friends of the (Sangaree)Library group that has been working with the county library staff. One of our plans is to have a grand opening party very much like you have described! The county library director had asked us to hold off until March or April for this celebration. In addition to that, we have been told that a celebration of this type would not be allowed on the library property (according to the county attorney), because of liability issues. The field next to the library belongs to Ladson Youth Organization and we’d need permission from them to have it there. What we have been offered is a day when the public attends a day long sort of open house in the facility with some refreshments provided. I like what you have described and hope we can come up with something like that, but the library facility is owned by Berkeley County and we have to abide by what they tell us.
The Friends is a non profit group of community volunteers. We support the library’s programs when county budget doesn’t cover things and as the librarian asks, with fund raisers, volunteer efforts, etc. EVERYONE is welcomed and needed. Membership is less than $10 per family. I’ll bring some info about us at the March 15 crime watch meeting
Another funding project we are working on is a memorial brick project (similar to the fence project at Gahagan Park). Bricks are sold to individuals and business, inscribed and placed along the sidewalks at the library. Keep it in mind! Our library is going to need a lot!
Wow! Sangaree is coming alive! I have waited a long time to see this kind of community involvement. See you at the meeting March 15! Suzette

I’ve been thinking about this celebration suggestion…some things came to my mind, such as, make it a Sangaree celebration for the crime watch organization, the library and renewed community spirit. Ladson Youth Org. may allow it on the field, Sangaree Christian Church and Ridge Bapt. have large pieces of property and have been cooperative in the past.
Another event that happens yearly throughout the country is The National Night Out (in connection to the crime watch). It involves celebrations, neighborhood events, and of course, the basic part is everyone coming out on a designated night against crime–usually in block parties, back yard bbq’s, etc. Go to www.nationalnightout.org for description and assistance in planning.

I agree that we need a community wide celebration! In order not to diffuse energy I am thinking doing it the same day as the county is holding the “library grand opening” would be good. Does anyone have cantact info for Clyde (Ladson YOuth)? I know Suzette (Friends of Berk Co Library at Sangaree) is on here. what other community groups do we want/need

I think that a day of activities would be great. bbq pizza whatever, it would show that we as a community support it and I agree that it would be nice to get to know some neighbors.

I finally had a chance to visit the new library. I’ll get the negative comments out of the way first… There was a teenager sleeping on one of the benches out front which made a terrible first impression. Then I got inside, and there were a group of about 7 or 8 kids making all kinds of noise. One of them was wearing one of those ridiculous Blue Tooth cell phone ear pieces… I hate those things… and they were just being loud and obnoxious. Never saw one even pick up a book or a magazine. The staff were very busy, but they did get to them and ask them to quiet down and threatened to tell their mother. Of course, there was no mother. I am hopeful that the library doesn’t just become a new hangout place for unruly kids. I think it’s great for kids to be there as long as they’re quiet and respectful, but drumming on the wood, knocking over chairs, and giggling is disturbing.

With that out of the way, I was very pleased with both the library and the staff. It’s a beautiful facility, and the staff was very friendly and helpful, even with how bisy they were.
