New Vandalism in Sangaree
As I drive to work everyday, like most people, I pass the entrance signs to my subdivision. Today, as I was passing them, I noticed that one of them looked like it had fallen over against the tree behind it. I slowed down and looked behind me to get a better look. My jaw dropped when I realized the real story.
Someone(s) had burned down the entrance sign to Tabby Creek!
It must have happened sometime last night the sign was just fine when I came home from work yesterday.
Interestingly enough, there was already one of those red signs up saying “Vandalism Costs Sangaree Taxpayers Money!” I don’t know who is providing or posting those signs, but they sure are on top of things.
If you have any information on who burned down the entrance sign to Tabby Creek, please call the Berkeley County Sheriff’s department at 577-6146 or 577-9562.
Update: I planned to take a picture of the destruction after work today, but when I got home, everything was pretty much cleaned up, although you can still see the charred ground where the sign used to be.

Wow! In a way this is a very BAD thing (I mean vandalism is never considered a good thing) but in another way I think this shows that the Crime Watch is making headway. Everything I have researched has said that when a community starts to make headway against vandalism and other crimes there is a temporary surge in such incidents. Seems that the “bad element” wants to see how much effort it will “really” take to get people to back down and let them continue w/ their destruction.

Here is the news story about the Sangaree house being torched this weekend. What is wrong with our kids? They have no repect for the lives and property of others. Something needs to be done and it needs to be done quickly before someone loses their life.
Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputies say two teens are to blame for destroying a family’s home. Authorities arrested a 13 year old and 15 year old for breaking into a home and setting it on fire. It happened Saturday around noon in the Sangaree area of Summerville - near 17A.
“The shock and reality hasn’t hit me full force yet,â€? said Melba Baughman outside her burnt home.
Ten years of memories reduced to ashes.
Melba Baughman was visiting family Saturday when deputies say two teens set her house on fire.
“This is not something you take lightly. I hope and pray that the life takes to the max the punishment for them because there’s no sense in it. It’s uncalled for.â€?
Her house is now a crime scene littered by broken glass and burnt mementos.
“My husband passed away and we had this antique piano that we kept our pictures of the prom and his navy book from when he retired and I kept that on display and as you can see that’s gone. The ceiling has dropped from the heat. It’s gone. It’s all gone.â€?
Gone are the family recipes, bowls and mixers used to prepare holiday meals, but the memories remain.
“When you’re here in the kitchen, what’s probably the one memory that sticks out the most?â€? I asked Baughman.
“Being able to cook and prepare a meal for the family. We could sit at the dinning room table and talk about our day,â€? she answered. “That’s what hard. There’s no longer that memento there to see or to relish that moment. It’s just not there anymore.â€?
Messages of hope are written in the ash of destruction encouraging the family to rely on faith.
“They’re not going to take away the love of my family and love of my friends. They’ll never do that. That’s why we will rebuild and get things back to order and be stronger than ever.â€?
The fire did kill two cats that lived in the home, but nobody else was injured. Berkeley County deputies say the fire may be a result of a dispute between the two teens in custody and the homeowner’s son.
