How to Contact the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department
We, as residents, need to report all crimes and incidents to the Sheriff’s Department. Every time you have a concern, you must call the Sheriff, report the crime, and get a case number! If you do not get a case number, the crime is not recorded, and it is as if it did not happen! I cannot emphasize this enough. You must get a case number! Use the drug tip line if you want to make an anonymous report for activity, but we must get all the crimes into the crimes database with a case number to be effective.
IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY - DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL 911!
When making a report, clearly state the following information to the Dispatcher. (You do not need to wait for the Dispatcher to ask):
- Your full name
- Your street address
- Your telephone number
- The nature of your emergency. Be specific in your details! Tell the Dispatcher:
- What is happening and where?
- Who is in danger? What is happening?
- Clear description of people, cars, license plate numbers, and house number.
- Ask to meet with an officer and make a report with a case number.
When meeting with the officer, ask for a case number. Again, this is the only way the crime gets reported!
I understand that many people have bad experiences with Dispatch and the responsiveness of the Sheriff’s Department, but if we do not call, nothing will change! We must use the system we have. We must give the Sheriff the opportunity to respond.
